Bolga Baskets

These baskets are hand woven by the people of the village of Zaare near Bolgatanga, Ghana, where weaving is the traditional skill of the people.

The Bolga Basket is made of the straw "veta vera" grass (locally called elephant grass), which grows along the banks of rivers, streams, and swampy areas.

The straw is dried, split, and twisted. The dyes are of natural products of the area.
